Music Lessons

Why Take Music Lessons?

"Music hath charms to soothe the savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak."

This famous quote by William Congreve rings true even today. Scientific studies done in the last twenty years have shown that studying music contributes unequivocally to the positive development of the human brain. Research by Frances Rauscher, Gordon Shaw and Katherine Ky in 1994 showed that after eight months of keyboard lessons, preschoolers demonstrated a 46% boost in their spatial reasoning IQ, a skill important for certain types of mathematical reasoning. Further, early music training appears to strengthen the connections between brain neurons and perhaps even leads to the establishment of new pathways. Added to that, studies have found that teaching healthy elderly people to play music decreases their anxiety, depression & loneliness and may even slow down the onset of dementia. Music lessons it seems, has something to offer everyone.

Selecting The Right Teacher

Learning to play a musical instrument takes time and the right teacher can make the process stress free and enjoyable. Professional instructors, those who have chosen to dedicate their lives to teaching music should always be on the top of the list. With years of teaching and performing experience, a professional instructor knows how to get from point A to point B and will be there for the duration.

Learning Styles

A qualified instructor should also understand that students have different learning styles. From auditory learners, those who learn through listening, visual learners, those who learn through seeing to kinesthetic learners, those who learn through moving, doing and touching.

Choosing A School

There are many choices out there so it is important to consider all the offerings a school may have and how long they have been around. Schools that have been in business for 10 or 20 or more years must be doing something right and on the top of your list. Also consider there is more to becoming a true musician than just learning to play and a good school should offer programs that offer students an opportunity to work with other musicians and perform on a regular basis if they so choose. Students who have the opportunity to demonstrate their newly learned skills tend to practice more and are more likely to continue to enjoy their lessons.
